Hong Kong is a great place for American students to experience Asia and witness history in the making. Because Hong Kong is a part of yet still separate from the People's Republic, it offers a distinctive "inside-yet-outside" perspective on how China is changing as it integrates into the emerging global system-all in an open intellectual environment where academic freedom prevails.
Undergraduates with little or no Asian language training can benefit fully from the rich academic and cultural offerings of Hong Kong's universities because English is the major language of instruction. All universities offer 35 to 50 different academic programs at the bachelor's and master's degree levels.
Immerse yourself fully in the rich academic, business, and cultural opportunities of one of the most diverse, dynamic, and invigorating cities in the world. Hong Kong is in a unique position: it has authority over its domestic affairs and is deeply engaged in the global market; however, for more than a decade it has existed under the sovereignty of China.
In this bustling international center, choose from three highly ranked universities where you can take course work in English with local and international students.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offers course work in the arts and humanities, business, the sciences, engineering, and the social sciences. Most courses are taught in English; others are taught in Cantonese and Putonghua. The study of Chinese language (Cantonese and Putonghua) is featured.
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) offers virtually all fields of study. Instruction is in English.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a young and vibrant institution for students majoring in business, engineering, or the sciences. Instruction is in English.
Courses
Students take 3 hours of class per day, Monday - Friday. Thus, 15 hours of studies per week, or 60 hours per month. This includes a 1 hour language lab. Class times are held in the morning or afternoon, depending on your level. All students take a placement test to determine level, and then placed in the proper level course. All levels are offered, from the absolute beginner thru intermediate and advanced levels. Both Cantonese and Mandarin courses are available, with a major focus on "immersion - conversation" learning as well as reading and writing. Students are guided to speak only Cantonese or Mandarin in the classroom, and class size is kept small (7 or less), to maximize personal attention. All the courses are taught by qualified teachers from Hong Kong who have completed special training for teaching Chinese as a second language to non-native speakers. A transcript (Certificate) is awarded to all students upon completing the course. See the program dates section for more schedule information. |
